ASCAP composers and international affiliates clinched the majority of awards at the 2008 World Soundtrack Awards, which closed out the 35th Annual Ghent International Film Festival in Ghent, Belgium on October 18th. James Newton Howard took home the coveted Film Composer of the Year award. Legendary composer Angelo Badalamenti, known for his string of collaborations with David Lynch (Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Mulholland Drive), was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Marianne Faithfull. The other big winners included Dario Marianelli (PRS) for Best Original Score of the Year (Atonement) and Marc Streitenfeld, named Discovery of the Year.
After the Awards ceremony, the Brussels Philharmonic performed film music by Badalamenti, Marianelli, and Belgian composer Tuur Florizoone, a SABAM member who licenses through ASCAP in the US. The music of last year's Discovery of the Year award winners, SADAIC composers Daniel Tarrab and Andres Goldstein of Argentina (who also license through ASCAP), was also performed at the World Soundtrack Awards concert.
Additionally, on October 17th, there was a separate concert featuring SACEM composer Gabriel Yared performing the music from several films by the late director Anthony Minghella, which Yared scored.
